Spirit Break Out

If anyone ever tells you being a Christian is easy, trust me, they are trying to play a fast one on you.

In fact, the very process of anyone becoming a Christian is enough proof the God exists.

For someone to decide to leave the apparent “freedom” that the world gives and choose to subject their will to the will of the Father is nothing short of a supernatural event.

“The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so.” -Romans 8:7

And then the deeper we get the more time and effort the holy spirit requires from us. Soon enough it becomes a war within your body because your heart wants something deeper but it feels like you are physically unable to carry it out.

Ever wanted to get up in the morning to pray but it seemed like you just couldn’t?

Or wanted to spend more time studying the word of God but it felt so forced?

“I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.” – Romans 7:15

Eventually, you feel so restless and unsettled because your heart cannot fulfil its desire to be with God.

I’ll explain why

“Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” Matthew 26:41

I have heard this scripture being used as an excuse so many times.

As with so many things in the bible, people pick out the part that suits them.

But I’ve come to realise that God doesn’t put excuses in the bible,

He only makes us aware of a potential stumbling block and suggests a solution along with it.

The flesh is weak from over feeding, it’s unfit.

Spiritual activities require a lot energy which the flesh does not have because it is “morbidly obese” and weak from overfeeding.

It is so heavy it weighs down our spirits.

That’s literally the picture of so many of us, we are constantly feeding our flesh with things of the world and leaving our spirit to starve.

So, what do we need to do?

We need to kill our flesh and strengthen our spirits

“For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live. For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God.” Romans 8: 13-14

“Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.” Galatians 5:24- 25

The bible instructs us to crucify our flesh. This is quite significant because studies show that death by crucifixion is usually a slow and painful one in which the body gives up eventually but not immediately.

This tells us that we cannot kill our flesh with one strike, it is a slow and uncomfortable process.

So how do we do it?

Through fasting. Now fasting goes beyond staying away from food.

“Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.” Matthew 16:24

It is an intentional way of living in which we consistently and regularly deny of ourselves of things that enable the flesh.

Food is only one of the many things. It varies between people. It could be using your phone, watching series, talking to a certain person…

“Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed—not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence—continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling,” Philippians 2:12

We all know the certain things that need to be brought under subjection in each of our lives.

And if you don’t know, why not ask the holy spirit to reveal it to you?

The next and more important part is to strengthen our spirits.

How so? Diet and exercise

We need to feed our spirit with the word of God and spend time carrying out spiritual activities.

Spend time in the study of the word, in prayer, worship, walking in love, giving and exercising our spiritual gifts. Spend time doing these consistently

Don’t just do it because you are a Christian and it is expected of you.

Do it intentionally, knowing that you are strengthening your spirit.

That way the restlessness of the heart will disappear because your spirit now has space to grow as the flesh is repressed.

And our spirits can literally break out of the cocoon that is our flesh.

So that we can be all that we have been called to be.

Thanks for reading.

I hope you have been blessed.
